This issue is certainly relevant to California since it was the first out of 22 states to legalize the use of cannabis, better-known as marijuana or ‘pot’, for medical purposes. While the issue seems to only concern the USDA and similar federal agencies, private employers have the discretion to impose mandatory drug testing at work. Should they choose to do so, they can seek a licensed testing center or contact the nearest occupational health provider, like the U.S. HealthWorks Medical Group’s Oakland urgent care center, that also offers this service. Employers only have to keep California’s cannabis laws in mind for the sake of their workers.
