Urgent Care in Oakland: Dining Out and the Winter Vomiting Disease

Familiar with headlines reporting on cruise ships returning to port with a load of sick passengers suffering from vomiting, stomach cramps and diarrhea, California has been reeling with the reports of similar sickness after people ate at a Chipotle restaurant. These reports continue to grow expanding from coast to coast. The consensus from health officials is that these outbreaks are the result of exposure to norovirus, also called the winter vomiting disease. A Disease Spread through Close Contact The CDC estimates that over half of all food-borne illnesses occurring every year are attributable to norovirus. It can occur anywhere people are closely grouped together such as in restaurants, daycare centers, nursing homes and other places that operate in close quarters. This is especially tough on the very young, the elderly or those with compromised immune systems.
